“The Barn Owl, whilst in his library, stumbles across two mice chatting, both oblivious to the silent assassin only inches behind them’ 

I love all owls but have a special place in my heart for Barn Owls. We are blessed with 6 nesting sites all within walking distance of my front door and I see them most days, usually at dusk heading out for their evening hunt or very early in the morning zig zagging across the fields on their way home hoping for one last catch before they roost for the day. 

Barn Owls are near silent in flight. Their feathers have evolved to muffle sound and it can be very eerie seeing them fly overhead or nearby at night in complete silence. That’s where the nickname comes from ‘The Silent Assassin’. 

All owls are thought of as wise. That’s down to the legacy of a Greek myth - the goddess Athena was always depicted in art with an owl guarding her blind side so she could ‘see the whole truth’. Her owl kept her up to date with everything that she couldn’t see and helped her protect the city of Athens and impart wisdom to the mortals.

In a nod to the Greek myth, my wise old Barn Owl is retiring in his library, filled with his favourite books (thanks to everyone who suggested book titles, if you look carefully, you’ll probably find your titles in the library). Blurred in the foreground we see two mice idly chatting, oblivious to the Silent Assassin motionless only inches behind them.
